George M. Yates 1964 HS

 

George Yates grew up in a pioneer oil family in Artesia, NM. He attended high school at New Mexico Military Institute, graduating in 1964.  He then attended the University of Texas, graduating in 1969 earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Texas at Austin. In 2009 he graduated from Harvard Business School’s Owner/President Management executive education program.

 

George has served as president and CEO of HEYCO Energy Group, Inc., an oil and gas exploration and production company with operations in the United States and Europe. With offices in Roswell, New Mexico and Dallas, Texas, the Yates family has been active in the oil and gas business since the 1920s, beginning with one of the first wells ever drilled in New Mexico. In January of 2015 George successfully negotiated the acquisition of Harvey E. Yates Company (“HEYCO”) by Matador Resources Company, an independent energy company engaged in exploration, development, production, and acquisition of oil and natural gas resources in the United States. As part of the acquisition, George negotiated a major share holder position in Matador and a position on the Board of Directors.

Mr. Yates has served as President and Chairman of several industry organizations, including the Independent Petroleum Association of America, the New Mexico Landmen’s Association, the Natural Gas Council, Mountain States Legal Foundation of Denver, the Business and Industrial Political Action Committee and the Environmental Issues Council of Washington D.C., the Independent Petroleum Association of New Mexico and is a member of the National Petroleum Council.

George won the oil and gas industry’s prestigious Chief Roughneck Award in 2004 and entered the Rocky Mountain Oil & Gas Hall of Fame in 2009.

 

George Yates has demonstrated outstanding achievement after his time at New Mexico Military Institute, and he has forever cemented his legacy in the energy industry.  He and his family have supported New Mexico Military Institute through the establishment of the Yates Leadership Endowment.  His family also supports the Harvey Yates Memorial Scholarship that further supports not only scholarships but also cadet activities.  His induction into the NMMI Hall of Fame represents his dedication to following our credo of Duty, Honor and Achievement.
