Dr. Victor A. J. Van Lint 1945 HS – 1947 JC



Dr. van Lint graduated high school from New Mexico Military Institute in 1945; and earned a B.S. in Physics in 1950 and a Ph.D. in Physics in 1954 from the California Institute of Technology, specializing in fundamental particles in cosmic rays.


During his technical career, he was an instructor at Princeton University, participated in nuclear tests during service in the U. S. Army in the Nuclear Weapons Test Division, developed the electronics radiation effects program at General Atomic, and served as Vice President of Gulf Energy and Environmental Systems Corporation (now General Atomic Company). Dr. van Lint was also the Chief Scientist at Mission Research Corporation in La Jolla, California. He is the principal author of a book on Radiation Effects in Electronic Materials and has authored a chapter in the Academic Press of Physics. He has ultimately authored or co-authored more than a hundred articles in refereed technical journals.


Dr. van Lint has been recognized many times by national organizations of professional peers through the National Science Foundation, Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Summa Foundation. He also received high recognition by both the National Aeronautics and Space Administration receiving the NASA Public Service Award in 1981, “for outstanding contributions in providing technical expertise to the Voyager Project in the area of radiation effects in electronic parts, materials and circuits,” and by receiving the Defense Nuclear Agency’s Peter Haas award. Dr. van Lint is ultimately known for his pioneering work in radiation, electromagnetic pulse and high power microwave effects in electronics, solid-state and ionized-gas physics, and hardening of electronic systems to nuclear and electromagnetic stresses.


Dr. van Lint has demonstrated outstanding feats of achievement after his time at New Mexico Military Institute and he has forever cemented his legacy in the “Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics” fields.  His induction into the NMMI Hall of Fame inspires the next generation of leaders, explorers, innovators, and trailblazers at New Mexico Military Institute to dream about the future.
