HALL OF FAME

Guy Story Brown 1967 HS

Dr. Guy Story Brown was born in Boulder, Colorado, and attended high school at New Mexico Military Institute, graduating in 1967. Guy Brown was remembered by his classmates for his banter, measured oral delivery and soft social graces. He fit comfortably in any circle. His knowledge of history, classical writings, and depth of intellect gave him perspective about current events, a guiding purpose, and a sense of what was important in life. Despite consternation, at times, about living the life of a RAT at NMMI, he took solace in the knowledge that this too shall pass. This would be the tone that marked Guy’s life throughout his career.

After Guy graduated from the Institute he attended the American University in Paris, France, and then returned to Texas and received his BA from Abilene Christian University. He earned his MA and Ph.D. in literature and political philosophy at the University of Dallas.

Dr. Brown was a distinguished author, educator, philosopher, intellectual and cultural ambassador. He was a three-time presidential appointee, university professor, humanitarian, mentor, and director of a prison outreach program in Dallas. He began his career at the Advanced International Studies Institute; was twice appointed in 1982 and 1988 by President Reagan as Director of the United States Information Agency (USIA) Office of Cultural Centers and Resources in the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, and Director of the USIA Office of Academic Programs. Brown arranged for the publication of the Federalist Papers and other titles in Russian, Spanish, Hindi, and other languages, and led the bilateral negotiations between United States publishers and Soviet, East German, and Chinese publishing authorities. He administered the Fulbright international scholarship program, the Humphrey Program, directed U. S. international student advising, and American studies abroad. Under President G. H. Bush, he was the lead U. S. negotiator for the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs on all United States government bilateral educational and cultural programming under the Geneva Convention.

Dr. Brown received the United States Information Agency’s Director’s Special Award and Superior Honor Award, the Distinguished Service Award of the J. W. Fulbright Board of Foreign Scholarships, the United States Government Printing Office Distinguished Service Award, the Ben Franklin Award from the United States Public Printer and Superintendent, the Guttenberg Award, and the Ivan Fedorov Medal from the Unites Socialist Soviet Republic’s State Committee on Publishing. He was president of the Fine Arts Society of Texas. He taught at various universities, published books on political philosophy and Shakespearean interpretation. He was a Fellow of the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture, a member of the Cosmos Club and DACOR in Washington, D.C., as well as several national and international academic societies. He was also a member of the Lubbock Gem & Mineral Society. Dr. Guy Story Brown was 66 when he passed away on 30 July 2015 in Lubbock, Texas.

Dr. Brown’s conduct of his life and his many accomplishments represent the Institute’s credo of Duty, Honor and Achievement and fully qualify him to be inducted into the New Mexico Military Institute Hall of Fame.

Inducted for Eminence in His Field of Endeavor this twenty-first day of October, in the year 2016.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][/vc_section]
