Deceased Alumni

A quote from the 1933 Bronco about a cadet, George O. Speer 1933 JC, who was killed in a Polo Game, is appropriate at this ceremony.

BUT IF THEY ARE GONE FROM OUR RANKS,
WE KEEP THEM ON OUR ROSTER,
AS VALUES ONCE INTIMATELY KNOWN
AND AVAILABLE IN OUR RECOLLECTIONS
AND IN OUR HEARTS.
THEY WILL REMAIN FOREVER YOUNG.

Orozco, Beatriz E. 1980 JC ~ 19-Nov-2015 was born Oct. 5, 1959; she was a good daughter, sister and awesome aunt to three adorable, rambunctious nieces. She would lead an exemplary life of devotion to faith and family. Beatriz, or Beat, as she was affectionately known, was the first and favorite of seven mexican-American children from Juan and Maria de los Angeles Orozco. As the first born she became her mom’s little helper, assisting in cleaning, feeding and supervising the large brood of siblings. Because of her closeness to her mother, she would be the best at making gourmet dishes, at speaking fluent Spanish (her mother’s first language), and in being the wisest of them all. She graduated from high school at St. Mary’s Academy in Navoo, Il., was nominated for the Military Academy at West Point, New York and graduated from New Mexico Military Institute. Her dream to pursue a field as an architect would be sidetracked after her mother became disabled and severely ill. Physicians would bestow upon her the title of honorary doctor because of her significant contribution to her mother’s long-term care. In between she took great joy in caring for and playing with her nieces. After her mother passed away she was there to assist her father in his declining health. But soon, she would need to care for herself after being diagnosed with kidney failure and put on dialysis as her mother was before her. And like her mother, she would succumb to the disease. Man measures success in terms of power and wealth, but for those seeking a place in heaven, it is based on love, faith and sacrifice and by that measure she has earned her placement among the greatest of saints. Few ever come as close to repaying ones parents for all their love and sacrifices as she did. The family requests prayers for her eternal soul. She is survived by her father (Juan f. Orozco), six siblings (Juan C., Ruth, Mary, Gloria, Ana and David), and three nieces (Maria, Bebe and Jessica).

Kling, Charles T. “Tim” 1977 JC ~ 24-Jun-2011 Charles (Tim) T. Kling 54, a resident of Las Cruces, New Mexico died at the Memorial Medical Center on Friday, 24 June 2011. Tim was born in Bisbee, Arizona on 1 November 1956, the second of three children of Chuck and JoDean Kling. He is survived by his loving wife Barbara, daughters Samantha, Valerie and Anna, granddaughters Nevaeh and Harmony of Las Cruces, NM along with many other relatives and many great friends. Tim’s only real and true love in life were his girls; wife, daughters and granddaughters. Tim is a graduate of New Mexico Military Institute (JC77) and a Veteran of the US Navy, honorably discharged in 1983 after serving for six years in squadron VA-75, The Sunday Punchers aboard the USS Saratoga, CV-60. Tim entered public service after leaving the Navy where he worked Law Enforcement in Silver City, NM, became the Chief Investigator for the District Attorney’s Office for 6th Judicial District which consists of Grant, Luna and Hidalgo counties and later moved to Las Cruces, NM and became the Chief Investigator for the 3rd Judicial District for Doa±a Ana County. He then left public service for a short time where he co-founded a Private Investigative Service, Sunrise Investigations but Tim’s love for helping people was too great and for the past 18 years, has worked as Federal Investigator for the U.S. Courts, working for the Federal Public Defender’s Office in Las Cruces, a job he truly loved. In life, Tim was an avid outdoorsman and sought every opportunity to camp, hunt, fish and backpack with his family and friends. Quick witted and an excellent sense of humor, he was well liked and considered to be the life of any social event. Tim jokingly said that when he died he wanted the following inscription on his headstone: “I told you I was sick”. However, per his wishes, Tim will be cremated and his cremains will be released in the Gila Wilderness at his favorite lakeside location. Tim doesn’t want a funeral service, only a wake. He doesn’t want sad people in suits saying sad words, speaking over him teary eyed, trying to say something nice. He wants a wake where his many friends who might not even know each other can gather and meet and see how blessed he was through his friends and family.

Alley took his first flight in 1985, and became an avid balloonist thereafter. He enjoyed motorcycling, camping and travel, was a short wave enthusiast, and loved to to do woodworking. Chittim, Kevin R. 1974 HS ~ 11-Jul-2014 58, a longtime resident of Cedar Park, passed away from a long illness on July 10, 2014 in Temple, Texas.Texas Kevin was born in Wurzburg, Germany where his father, Reed, was stationed on Nov. 19, 1955. The moment his mother, B a r b a r a , gave birth, the church bells next door rang. He was the second of nine children and the oldest son of Reed and Barbara Chittim of Wyoming. Both sets of his grandparents were also proud to be from Wyoming. Kevin grew up in New Mexico and loved being on the New Mexico Military Institute’s Rodeo team with his beloved brother, Tim. They had many escapades and wonderful adventures. He attended the University of Wyoming and graduated from the University of Texas. He was a diehard fan of both institutions. Kevin was the owner of AA Teledata and also a broker with TCB Realty. He worked hard but his real achievement in life was his love for his family and his extended “family.” His proudest moment was the day his son, Austin, was born and then when Austin and his wife, Tara, brought two beautiful grandbabies, Jacob and Stella, into this world. Kevin loved nothing more than spending time with them and his dogs over the years who were also a big part of his family. He is survived by his mother, Barbara Bell (San Diego), his former spouse Michelle Chittim, his son, Austin Chittim, his daughter-in-law, Tara Chittim and their children, Jacob and Stella all of Austin. He is also survived by his eight siblings: Kathleen Strukoff and her husband, Rudy (Calif.); Tim Chittim and his wife Gina (Austin), Teresa Chittim (N.M.), Virginia Chittim (N.M.), Bridget Chittim (Austin), Mary Fields (Austin), Margaret Blythe and her husband, JB (Colo.) and Charlie Chittim (San Diego) and their children. He is also survived by his aunts, Marilee Fattor (Colo.) and Margaret Bell (N.Y.). He was predeceased by his father, Reed. Kevin loved music of all sorts and sports. He attended not only every one of his son’s football games but every practice and was an extremely involved parent with those teams. One sentence that would sum up Kevin’s life is: He had such a broad definition of “family” that included a wide array of special amigos and he was the surrogate father and brother to many. Mr. C’s house was the safe haven and caring place for many. Kevin absolutely believed that his granddads and his father were heroes and he made every effort to be a hero to his son. The biggest legacy he would want to leave would be to have his son be a hero to his kids in return. His extended family will miss Kevin’s outrageous, signature laugh and that twinkle he always had in his eye. “God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be so he put his arms around you and whispered, “Come to Me” With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you pass away and although we love you dearly we could not make you stay. A Golden heart stopped beating hard working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best”

He could identify each blade of native grass and flora and enjoyed tendering a habitat for the wildlife on his Chaves County ranch. He loved raising cattle and called many of them by name. He was a knowledgeable historian of the Land of Enchantment’s rich past and told intriguing stories of the people who settled the vast lands that he worked and studied. Keith loved the mountains and was an outstanding, fluid downhill skier. When people noticed his skill, he was often approached and asked for advice on how to improve their techniques. Keith was a believer and follower of Jesus Christ and a longtime member of Calvary Chapel of Roswell. His faith assures that he is no longer suffering the trials of this world, but is rejoicing in the arms of his Lord and Savior. His family is left to mourn, but we grieve with hearts full of hope, especially as resurrection Sunday approaches to remind us of the victory over death that Christ assured us by the Cross and resurrection. “Thanks be to God! He gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” – 1 Corinthians 15:57.

“Bob” Slaughter of Tivoli died Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011, in a car accident. Thankfully, no one else was injured. Celebration of life: and reception will be held 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 4, at Rio Mambo’s at Bryant Irvin Road and Interstate 20 in Fort Worth. A private memorial service led by the Rev. Marcos Kohlke of First Baptist Church of Tivoli was held Saturday, Nov. 26, at Bob’s home on the banks of the Guadalupe River in South Texas. Family and close friends traveled from British Columbia, Canada; Tampico, Mexico; Utah; and many points in Texas. A friend from Victoria shared a letter from Bob written to her at her time of grief. He wrote, “seems the older I get an old analogy of the Tree of Life helps explain the cycle of life. Our families are like trees, growing and providing shade for others. Sometimes storms come and blow the leaves off. The leaves fall to the ground and return to the soil where the nutrients are pulled back into the tree to make it stronger. Why do some leaves make it and others don’t? I cannot say. Still the tree grows and the forest flourishes and the cycle continues” Bob was born Jan. 18, 1953, in Fort Worth. A sixth-generation Texan who spent most his life in Fort Worth, Bob was most recently residing in Tivoli, where he was building his dream vacation place for his large extended family. He was a longtime partner in several family partnerships, a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Marine officer and he enjoyed restoring vintage boats. Bob never met a stranger. His generosity and compassion were notable as was his fun-loving nature. In short, Bobby was a fun person to know.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlotte and Edwin Fonner. His sister, Sally Fonner, and brother, Chuck Fonner, survive. Vernon worked with his parents at Fonner’s Dry Cleaning, and helped establish Leisure Time Estates and Sparkling Springs in Danville. In the 19 years that he worked as a salesman, he remains the only person at United Laboratories to sell a million dollars in one year. Vernon devoted his life to his children and wife. He was the greatest father possible to his three children, Ann Button (Jim), Brooks Fonner and Vernon J. (V.J.) Fonner. He was the most loving, patient and caring husband to his wife, Misty Fonner. Our hearts are broken, but we remember him by the jokes that he would tell throughout the day; this was one of his favorites. – The Fly Above the Lake – “There’s a fly six inches above the lake; a fish spots that fly, thinks to himself, if that fly drops six inches, he could leap out the water and catch that fly. “There’s a bear, he spots that fly and thinks to himself, if that fly drops six inches, a fish will leap out of the water to get the fly and he can reach out and grab the fish. “There’s a hunter across the lake eating a cheese sandwich. The hunter spots that fly and thinks to himself, if that fly drops six inches a fish is going to leap out of the water, and the bear can reach out to grab the fish and the hunter can shoot the bear. “There a mouse behind the hunter. The mouse spots that fly and thinks to himself, if that fly drops six inches a fish will leap out of the water, a bear will reach out to grab the fish and the hunter will get up to shoot the bear and drop the cheese sandwich, and the mouse can go after the cheese sandwich. “There’s a cat behind the mouse; the cat that spots the fly thinks to himself, if that fly drops six inches, the fish will leap out of the water, the bear will reach out to grab the fish and the hunter will get up to shoot the bear and drop the cheese sandwich, and the mouse will go after the cheese sandwich and the cat will go after the mouse. “So what happens? “The fly drops six inches, the fish leaps out of the water, the bear reaches out to grab the fish, the hunter gets up to shoot the bear and drops his cheese sandwich, the mouse goes after the cheese sandwich and the cat leaps to get the mouse, but misses and rolls into the water.” Now what’s the moral of the story?
